Cambodia’s Thailand exports fall 41 percent in first four months

Cambodian exports to neighbouring Thailand were valued at $402 million in the first four months of this year, a 41 percent decrease compared with the same period last year.

Figures from the Ministry of Commerce of Thailand show Cambodia imported $2.292 billion of goods from Thailand, a 5 percent decrease.

The two-way trade amount registered a 13 percent decrease to $2.694 million, according to the ministry.

Agricultural products accounted for the majority of Cambodian exports to Thailand, while Thai exports to Cambodia primarily consisted of energy resources, agriculture fertiliser, food supplies and cosmetics.

The Cambodian Business Council (CBC) in Thailand is beginning a new era for strengthening trade and investment ties between the neighbouring countries in the aftermath of the COVID-19 crisis, which has negatively affected their economic growth for more than a year.

Ouk Sorphorn, Cambodian ambassador to Thailand, said the Cambodian government had made efforts to combat the Covid-19 crisis, aimed at rebuilding economic resilience through the launch of the Economic Diplomacy Strategy 2021-2023, the establishment and participation in bilateral and multilateral free trade areas to diversify export markets, as well as amendments to investment law and other reforms to improve business environment in the country.

CBC has the duty to promote bilateral economic and trade activities between Cambodia and Thailand, as well as exchange information and knowledge related to business and improving quality of goods and services, production and supply promotion among members, as well as to coordinate and negotiate with government institutions in both Thailand and Cambodia to address challenges faced by members.

Jiranun Wongmongkul, president of the Thai Business Association in Cambodia, said more Thai investors are looking to expand into Cambodia.
